What this chapter is
Before advanced grammar, you need a clean understanding of how English sentences are built.
Core building blocks
- Parts of speech: noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, conjunction, interjection.
- Sentence structure: subject + verb + object/complement.
- Clauses: independent and dependent clauses.
- Modifiers: words that describe nouns or verbs and must be placed correctly.
Minimum rules to master first
- A sentence must have a subject-verb relationship.
- Pronouns must agree with their nouns.
- Modifiers should be close to the word they describe.
- Conjunctions should connect equal grammatical units.
Example
Wrong: Running fast, the gate was reached by Rohan.
Correct: Running fast, Rohan reached the gate.
Reason: Modifier ("running fast") should describe Rohan, not gate.

Use school textbook paragraphs and mark:
- subject in one color,
- verb in another,
- modifiers in a third.
This visual marking makes grammar errors easy to spot in objective questions.
