Frequently asked questions
Is NDA a college, an exam, or a job?
The National Defence Academy is a tri-service training academy. The NDA & NA Examination is the UPSC selection examination used for admission to NDA and the notified Indian Naval Academy course. Selection begins an officer-training path; it is not an immediate civilian college admission or direct appointment without further training.
How often is the NDA examination conducted?
UPSC normally conducts NDA & NA Examination (I) and (II) each year. Notification and examination dates can change, so use the UPSC annual calendar and current examination notice rather than relying on an assumed month.
Can both boys and girls apply?
Yes. Eligible unmarried male and female candidates may apply. Vacancies are notified service-wise and may be shown separately by gender. Candidates must satisfy all conditions in that examination's notice.
Can a Class 11 student apply?
No. Candidates must have passed Class 12 or be appearing in Class 12 under the 10+2 pattern or an equivalent examination, subject to the documentary deadline in the notification.
Can an Arts or Commerce student apply?
A Class 12 pass in any stream can satisfy the educational condition for the Army Wing. The Naval Wing, Air Force Wing, and INA 10+2 Cadet Entry require Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics at Class 12 level. Other conditions still apply.
What is the age limit?
NDA is broadly a 16½–19½ years entry, but UPSC defines eligibility through an exact date-of-birth window for each course. Always compare your date of birth with the current notice; a rounded age calculation is not authoritative.
How many attempts are allowed?
UPSC does not prescribe a fixed attempt count in the usual sense. You may apply whenever you fall inside the notification's date-of-birth window and meet every other condition. The narrow age window naturally limits the number of opportunities.
Is Mathematics compulsory in the written exam for everyone?
Yes. Every candidate takes both written papers: Mathematics (300 marks) and General Ability Test (600 marks), including candidates applying only for the Army Wing.
Is there negative marking?
Yes. For a wrong answer, one-third of the marks assigned to that question is deducted. Marking more than one option is treated as wrong. There is no penalty for leaving a question blank.
Is the NDA paper available in Hindi?
The Mathematics paper and Part B (General Knowledge) of GAT are set bilingually in Hindi and English. Part A of GAT assesses English and is therefore an English-language section.
Do I need to clear both papers separately?
Candidates must meet the qualifying standards fixed by UPSC, including any paper-wise minimums applied for that examination. A strong GAT score should not be used as a reason to ignore Mathematics, or vice versa.
What happens after the written result?
Written-qualified candidates follow the service-selection instructions and attend SSB. SSB includes Stage I screening and Stage II assessment. Recommended candidates then undergo detailed medical examination. Final selection depends on combined merit, eligibility, medical fitness, preferences, and vacancies.
What does SSB look for?
SSB assesses officer potential through intelligence and personality testing, psychology tests, group tasks, interview, and conference. There is no single trick or model answer. Consistent behaviour, communication, judgement, teamwork, initiative, awareness, and honesty matter more than rehearsed slogans.
Does clearing SSB guarantee admission?
No. A candidate must also be medically fit and rank high enough in the final merit process for available vacancies. Recommendation at SSB is a major stage, not the final joining order.
Can spectacles or a medical condition disqualify me?
Medical suitability depends on the service, branch, severity, measurements, and the standards in force. Aviation standards can differ from non-flying standards. Do not self-reject based on informal advice; read the official medical appendix and seek an appropriate medical opinion.
Is coaching compulsory?
No. UPSC does not require coaching. The official syllabus, school-level fundamentals, previous papers, timed practice, current-affairs revision, and honest SSB preparation are sufficient foundations. Coaching quality varies and cannot guarantee selection.
Does NDA guarantee a degree?
Cadets who successfully complete the prescribed NDA academic programme are awarded degrees through Jawaharlal Nehru University according to their stream. Entry and continued training remain subject to academy standards.
Can I marry during training?
Candidates must be unmarried and are not permitted to marry during the prescribed training period. The exact undertaking and consequences are stated in the UPSC notification.
