SSB Interview Guide
The 5-day Services Selection Board process, stage by stage.
After clearing the NDA written exam, you are called to a Services Selection Board (SSB) for a five-day personality and intelligence assessment. It is not a knowledge test — it measures whether you have the 15 Officer Like Qualities (OLQs) the armed forces look for. The same OLQs are assessed independently by three assessors: the Psychologist, the Group Testing Officer (GTO) and the Interviewing Officer.
Screening (Stage I)
Day 1- •Officer Intelligence Rating (OIR) — two timed tests of verbal & non-verbal reasoning.
- •Picture Perception & Description Test (PPDT) — view a hazy picture (30s), write a story (4 min), then narrate and discuss in a group.
- •Only screened-in candidates continue to Stage II; the rest are sent back the same day.
Psychological Tests
Day 2- •Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) — write stories on 11 pictures + 1 blank slide.
- •Word Association Test (WAT) — respond to 60 words, 15 seconds each.
- •Situation Reaction Test (SRT) — react to 60 real-life situations in 30 minutes.
- •Self Description Test (SD) — write how parents, teachers, friends and you describe yourself.
Group Testing (GTO)
Day 3 & 4- •Group Discussion (GD) and Group Planning Exercise (Military Planning).
- •Progressive Group Task (PGT), Half Group Task (HGT) and Final Group Task using obstacles, helping material and rules.
- •Individual Obstacles (10 obstacles in 3 minutes), Command Task and Snake Race / Group Obstacle Race.
- •Lecturette — a short 3-minute solo talk on a chosen topic.
Personal Interview
Across days- •A one-on-one conversation with the Interviewing Officer, often based on your PIQ form.
- •Covers family, education, hobbies, current affairs, general awareness and situational judgement.
- •Be honest, specific and consistent — answers are cross-checked with your psychology and GTO performance.
Conference
Final Day- •The full board discusses each candidate and gives the final recommendation.
- •A short closing chat; recommended candidates then undergo medical examination.

How to prepare
- •Build genuine OLQs in daily life rather than memorising answers — assessors are trained to spot rehearsed responses.
- •Practise OIR/reasoning, improve written English and read a daily newspaper for the interview and lecturette.
- •Maintain physical fitness for the GTO ground tasks and obstacles.
- •Fill the PIQ form truthfully and be ready to elaborate on every entry in the interview.
