Cloze Test and Cohesion

Solve fill-in-the-blank passages by tracking flow, logic, and connector words.

Level

Exam-focused

Study Time

16 min

Exam Relevance

High (tests grammar + vocabulary + logic together)

What is tested

Cloze passages test whether you can keep sentence-level and paragraph-level meaning connected.

Cohesion clues to watch

 • Addition: moreover, furthermore, also
 • Contrast: however, although, yet
 • Cause-effect: therefore, thus, hence
 • Time flow: first, then, finally

Solving method

 1. Read full passage once without options.
 2. Fill obvious blanks first.
 3. Use grammar agreement (subject-verb, tense, article) for remaining blanks.
 4. Re-read final paragraph for smoothness.

Common error

Students pick a grammatically correct word that breaks meaning flow. In cloze, both grammar and logic must fit.

NCERT/CBSE bridge

Use paragraph writing exercises from school materials:

 • delete one word from each sentence,
 • ask yourself what restores meaning and flow.

This trains cohesion naturally.

Many important bilateral and multilateral meetings and negotiations are held ____15____ regular intervals.

Question 2

The Earth’s climate is / 6 (a) passionately (b) continually (c) deadly (d) thoughtfully changing and evolving. Some of 7 (a) these (b) those (c) this (d) that changes have been due to natural causes but others can be attributed to 8 (a) practical (b) geological (c) human (d) animal activities such as deforestation, emissions from industry and transport, etc., which have led to the 9 (a) assimilation (b) absolution (c) collection (d) accumulation of gases and aerosols in 10 (a) an (b) a (c) the (d) no article atmosphere. These gases are known as greenhouse gases because they trap heat and 11 (a) raise (b) hike (c) rise (d) balance air temperatures near the ground, acting like a greenhouse on the surface of the 12 (a) crust (b) core (c) mantle (d) planet. In order to create and strengthen the scientific and analytical capacity 13 (a) for (b) of (c) in (d) to assessment of climate change in the country, different studies under Climate Change Action Programme 14 (a) are developed (b) are initiated (c) have developed (d) have initiated. Many important bilateral and multilateral meetings and negotiations are held 15 (a) with (b) at (c) in )d) on regular intervals.

Question 3

Most of our food comes from agriculture, so we tend to believe that it is 6 (a) independent (b) dependent (c) relevant (d) consequent of natural biota. This is not true. In nature, 7 (a) the (b) both (c) some (d) among plants and animals 8 (a) had been continuously subjected (b) will be continuously subjected (c) continuously subjected (d) are continuously subjected to the rigours of natural selection. Only the fittest survive. 9 (a) Consequently (b) Inadvertently (c) Although (d) Since wild populations have numerous traits for competitiveness, resistance to parasites, 10 (a) withdrawal (b) tolerance (c) adaptable (d) compliance to adverse conditions, 11 (a) and (b) with (c) by (d) upon other aspects of vigour. In contrast, populations grown for many 7 (a) eras (b) epochs (c) periods (d) generations under the pampered conditions of agriculture tend to lose these traits, because they 13 (a) had selected (b) have selected (c) are selected (d) might select for production, not resilience. For example, a high-producing plant 14 (a) whichever (b) whom (c) that (d) whenever lacks resistance to drought is 15 (a) heated (b) irrigated (c) showered(d) deserted and the resistance to drought is ignored. Also, in the process of breeding plants for maximum production, all genetic variation is eliminated.
