1. The Earth: Latitudes, Longitudes and Movements

Concept

The Earth is an oblate spheroid. Latitudes (parallels) and longitudes (meridians) form a grid used to locate any point and to reckon time. The Earth rotates on its axis (causing day and night) and revolves around the Sun (causing seasons).

Longitude is directly linked to local time.

Key Points & Formulas

  • Equator = 0° latitude; Prime Meridian = 0° longitude (through Greenwich).
  • Earth rotates 15° of longitude per hour; the International Date Line is roughly 180°.
  • Tropic of Cancer 23½°N, Tropic of Capricorn 23½°S.
  • Indian Standard Time is based on 82½°E.

Worked Example

Q. If the local time at a place is ahead of Greenwich by 5 hours 30 minutes, find its longitude.

Earth turns 15° per hour ⇒ 1 hour = 15°, so 5.5 h = 82.5°.

Time is ahead of GMT ⇒ the place is east.

Longitude = 82½° E (this is India's standard meridian).

2. Rocks and their Classification

Concept

Rocks are natural aggregates of minerals, classified by how they form. The three families are igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic, linked by the rock cycle.

Each type has characteristic examples tested in the exam.

3. Types of Climate

Concept

Climate is the average weather of a region over a long period, shaped by latitude, altitude, distance from the sea and winds. Major climatic types range from equatorial to polar.

India's climate is dominated by the monsoon.

Concept

Concept

International trade involves importing goods a country needs and exporting its surplus. India's trade pattern reflects its resources and industries.

Crude oil dominates India's import bill.

6. Tides and Ocean Currents

Concept

Tides are the periodic rise and fall of sea level caused mainly by the gravitational pull of the Moon (and Sun). Ocean currents are large-scale movements of seawater that redistribute heat around the globe.

Spring and neap tides depend on the Sun–Moon alignment.

  • Tides are caused chiefly by the Moon's gravitational pull.
  • Spring tides (highest): Sun, Moon and Earth in line (full/new Moon).
  • Neap tides (lowest): Sun and Moon at right angles (quarter Moon).

Concept

The atmosphere is the envelope of gases around the Earth, divided into layers. Atmospheric pressure is the weight of air per unit area; differences in pressure drive winds.

Pressure decreases with altitude.

8. Regional Geography of India

Concept

India has diverse physical regions: the northern Himalayas, the northern plains, the peninsular plateau, the coastal plains and the islands. Each has distinct relief, rivers, climate and resources.

The Himalayas are the source of major north-Indian rivers.
